Five Ten "Mids" were originally called "Highs". This model shoe is in between a 3/4 cut and high top. I'm not sure why Five Ten decided to change the name. The Mids offer ankle protection, but like all other mid/high top shoes, offer no ankle support. The 2006 model is all black with a brushed leather finish. Many people buy one size smaller than what they normally wear. Five Tens have a large toe box and fit small through wide feet. The Stealth Rubber used in the sole sticks remarkably well to platform pedals! They actually stick too good for me. You foot is glued to the pedal after you place it over DH pedal studs.
